Dr. Poussaint earned her academic degrees, Doctor of Management, Master’s in Business Administration (MBA), and Bachelor of Science in communication studies from the University of Maryland Global Campus (formerly University of Maryland University College). Her dissertation focused on women and leadership entitled: Perceptual Factors Affecting Female CEO Placement in the Hospitality Industry. Dr. Poussaint has developed and teaches undergraduate and graduate-level business courses in the School of Business.
She has over 30 years of corporate business work experience serving in various leadership roles. She was employed for five years with UMUC, as an adjunct faculty member and Association Vice President of Alumni Relations. Prior to joining UMUC, she was employed with HMSHost (formerly Host Marriott Services) servings as Manager of Loss Prevention Services, a division of HR. As an adult learner herself, Dr. Poussaint understands her students and brings passion and life experiences to the classroom to engage students in understanding and applying business concepts and theories to their professional and personal lives. She is also the author of “The Power to Navigate Your Destiny: The Five Essential Principles You Need to Access the Power Within”.

She also has federal government experience covering the Freedom of Information Act and Privacy Act on the appellate level during her tenure at the U.S. Postal Service Corporate Law Department. Later, she worked for a non-profit tax publisher as a tax information specialist, legal editor and writer.
Professor Newell earned dual Bachelor of Science business degrees from North Carolina A&T State University in Marketing and Business Management. She has a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Baltimore and a Juris Doctor degree from North Carolina Central University. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with family, paper crafting, and exercising.
